Colibrí is the title track of Irene de Lema's new EP. The video takes its cue from the bird itself — the contrast between the frenetic exuberance of flight and the absolute stillness of torpor — to tell a story about grief and reconstruction: leaving behind what weighs us down, and blooming again from the root.
My role was direction. A large part of it happened before the shoot: driving through the forests of the Comunidad de Madrid and Ávila in search of a place — and a story — that matched what Irene was already carrying in her head. The concept, the emotional map of the piece and its language of movement grew out of that search.
Process
The preproduction was thorough. From there, Víctor Candela took over camera, edit and colour — shooting on a RED Komodo with Canon glass and bringing his editor's eye, building a pre-edit from the reference videos Irene and I had gone through together. Then the shoot, the grade, a few versions, and done. We also cut a set of reels from the footage and stills.
